Our Areas of Engineering Services

Cullimore Engineering offers a wide range of engineering services. From preventative maintenance programs and break-down repairs, to product design, development and production automation, and rebuilding mechanical components.

We utilise CNC machinery and GIBBS cam software, allowing us to offer production machining options for complex components. We have a variety of machining capabilities.

Milling

Cullimore Engineering’s milling capabilities come from vertical and horizontal manual mills. These machines are used to provide economic options for one off jobs. They also allow us to offer custom repairs.

Turning

Cullimore Engineering’s turning capabilities come from a range of lathes.  Three CNC lathes, ranging from our high-speed Okuma lathe, which can turn a diameter of up to 375 mm and a speed of up to 3500 rpm, to our large bore Microweily, with a maximum turning diameter of 660 mm and 2 metres between centres.  Complementing our CNC lathes is a set of five manual lathes.  These give us a manual turning capability of up to 630 mm diameter and 2.7 metres between centres.

Highly skilled operators, combined with a constantly evolving range of modern tooling, means that Cullimore Engineering can turn jobs to suit almost any application.

Horizontal Boring

In 2004, the decision was made to expand our line boring capabilities.  As a result, a FEMCO 4 axis CNC borer was purchased.  This machine can cope with a job weight over six ton and perform a huge array of complex operations. The large scale of the machine allows 3 metres of travel in the horizontal axis, 1.8 metres of vertical travel and 1.7 metres in line with the spindle.  The borer is also equipped with a rotary indexing table, giving us the ability to line bore jobs with accuracy and precision.

Also, in our boring machine line up, is a manual horizontal borer, used for some of the more basic jobs. Furthermore, the mechanical nature of the machine gives us the ability to machine, build up and re machine jobs in a single set up.

Vertical Machining

For Cullimore Engineering to successfully complete some of our more complex machining tasks, our first CNC vertical machining centre was purchased in 1993. Our current capability allows for the machine to hold up to 24 tools in an automatic tool changer.  This machine can work on job sizes up to 1350x630x700 mm.

Also, in our vertical machining range, is a vertical lathe.  This heavy duty machine has a 1500 mm chuck, giving CEL the ability to turn larger jobs.

Fabrication

Our skills in fabrication enable us to undertake a range of jobs. Further information on these is available in our work portfolio.

Specialist Solutions

Product design and development

Cullimore Engineering has been involved in product and process design, development and construction throughout its history. We have designed and built a number of specialised products including; earth-rod driving units, a thrust stage for the Ashburton trust event centre and a canal ferry at Lake Hood, Ashburton. In addition to this, we have solved component problems in a range of areas, from designing and fitting coach air-conditioner drives, to solving harmonic frequency issues in electric motors.

Our work with manufacturing earth-rod units has led us to continue to develop our custom built driving systems. To date, we have manufactured five earth-rod trucks.  Each of these were designed to meet specific client requirements.  The trucks use a modified driver on a mast designed in house.  We offer long-term servicing options with the trucks, which all use standard hydraulic components and drive units to ensure a lifetime of low-cost operation.
